Install Eclipse in Ubuntu 20.04

Step 1: Install Java

If java is installed skip this step.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
sudo apt update
sudo apt install oracle-java8-installer

Accept the lisence term

Once installed, check the Java version

javac -version
Step 2: Download Eclipse

Download using link https://www.eclipse.org/downloads/

Step 3: Install Eclipse

Extract the download file, and run installer

tar xfz ~/Downloads/eclipse-inst-linux64.tar.gz
~/Downloads/eclipse-installer/eclipse-inst

It will ask to select IDE. Select your choice.

I have selected Java EE, and click on install.

Accept license.

Click on Launch, and select Workspace.

Here is the welcome page! 🙂

Step 4: Create Eclipse App launcher
nano ~/.local/share/applications/eclipse.desktop

Paste the code into the file. Don’t forget to change /abhay/ with your username.

Type=Application
Exec=/home/abhay/eclipse/jee-2020-03/eclipse/eclipse
Terminal=false
Icon=/home/abhay/eclipse/jee-2020-03/eclipse/icon.xpm
Comment=Integrated Development Environment
NoDisplay=false
Categories=Development;IDE;
Name[en]=Eclipse

Pres CTRL + O to write the changes, then press CTRL + X to exit.

Make it executable

chmod +x ~/.local/share/applications/eclipse.desktop

Click on the launcher, and search Eclipse, Eclipse icon will be visible.
